MODERN SHOOTER 1 MARKSMANSHIP, MINDSET AND MANIPULATION

C\3 PHILOSOPHY:
C represents Commitment,
making the commitment to
train like there is no tomorrow!

3 represents the three sides of
the triangle:
Marksmanship
Mindset
Manipulation

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Weaponcraft’s Modern Shooter 1 was developed and refined after years
of extensive training and real world experience. It is designed for law enforcement
and military operators who need to perform under the worst of
conditions. Modern Shooter 1 will build upon a foundation of the basic
fundamentals of marksmanship, mindset and manipulation. With emphasis
on manipulation, the student will be exposed to intense, repetitious
training; training that will provide the core building blocks for quick, precise
reactionary responses. Weaponcraft believes that the shooter is fully
responsible for every round that leaves the barrel, both in training and in
combat. Under a critical eye the student’s skills are pushed to the extreme
with no discretion for mistakes. This course is not for the faint of heart, as
the student will experience and attain a level of total emersion in the art
of combat marksmanship. Students will work hard over the course of four
days to prepare the mind and body to act as one under extreme stress,
reaching standards most feel are unattainable.
The merits of Modern Shooter and the C\3 training philosophy have been
proven time and time again through the training of new recruits and seasoned
veteran operators alike. Federal agents, State and County Drug
Enforcement agents, SWAT/SRT operators, patrol officers and even new
Afghan Police recruits (with no higher than a third grade education and
requiring the aid of a language assistant) have all attained and surpassed
all pre-set standards through the use of this methodology under the direction
of our primary instructor and his fellow instructors.
At the conclusion of the course, Weaponcraft students will not only shoot
with accuracy under extreme stress, but will understand and believe in the
C\3 philosophy, something that will better prepare them to overcome and
survive a lethal encounter.

COST:
$490 for Law Enforcement and Military personnel
$425 per person for agencies/units sending three or more students
$750 for approved civilians and private security

Immediate Personal Defense (IPD)

“One shot to the body… GUN.”

I moved as quickly across the silhouettes as I could, maintaining front sight focus, delivering one shot to the body of each.  As I reached the third silhouette, I ran back to the first.

One shot to the body, one shot to the head… GUN.”

Again, I traversed the silhouettes moving as fast as possible, comfortable in my stances, feeling little recoil, maintaining front sight focus, switching weapon and support side hands at will, and maintaining accuracy at a blistering rate.

We continued escalating the shot patterns until we finished with 2 shots to the body and three to the head of the silhouettes… as a novice, I couldn’t believe what I had accomplished after such a short time shooting!

This is the Immediate Personal Defense (IPD) class- the civilian version of the Center Axis Relock (CAR) system of gunfighting developed by Paul Castle.  The next evolution in tactical training, IPD utilizes some very unique components to provide simply unbelievable results.  First, the bladed stance is a very natural stance and provides a level of stability when attacked or shooting in nearly all directions.  Secondly, felt recoil from firing the handgun is readily dispersed through a unique support hand platform and weapon hand/ forearm/ elbow/ shoulder alignment. This unique recoil support system leads to the third, and most dramatic aspect of IPD… the ability to maintain front sight focus despite high rates of fire because you don’t have to wait to reacquire the sight picture, your front sight is already on target.

I was lucky enough to have a private Weaponcraft class with Dan Hayden to review the practical aspects of IPD outlined in the mandatory online course through Paul Castle’s website.  In the online course, you review handgun safety basics, the benefits of IPD and how it works.  I practiced with my blue gun quite a bit before hitting the range because the system requires you to use the eye opposite your weapon hand for aiming, something that can take getting used to.  It also helps to become ambidextrous with your firearm before going to live fire and there are some great videos on the website for practicing lighting fast handgun transfer from weapon to support hand. Additionally, IPD has fairly unique malfunction clearing and reloading techniques that can be helpful to review in dry practice.

We had a perfect day on the range for shooting… sunny with a light breeze (just like every other day this summer).  We started with dry practice: checking stances, movement, shooting platforms (high position, combat high, extended, and apogee), changing weapon hands, and retention.  The system is so intuitive and natural that we were able to move to live fire drills and scenarios quickly.  The shot count was high as most of the drills require 2 shots to the body and 2 shots to the head as fast as you can pull the trigger, but this was matched by the satisfaction of getting rounds on target in a way I would have not thought possible at the start of the day.  Dan was superb (as always) and his knowledge of the history of shooting made this course particularly interesting as it gave me a more sophisticated perspective on IPD.

While I am looking forward to more courses through Weaponcraft, I feel I have found “my style” in IPD.  I would encourage everyone who is serious about personal defense to strongly consider signing up for their next available course.

Respectfully,

Norman Guay

Sig 551 Rifle Conversion!

The following blog entry was written originally on ar15.com by a Weaponcraft Customer, and he was kind enough to allow us to share it on the Weaponcraft Blog for all those Sig Rifle Fans.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

I’ve wanted a Sig 551 for many years now. So, when I was finally convinced that Sig had worked some of the “kinks” out of their process, I picked up a Sig Classic rifle. I ran about 400 rounds through it to make sure everything was working correctly, and that it was not battering the carrier as some of the earlier guns had done. Then set out to make a few changes…

First thing, the side-folding and collapsing stock had to go. it made an otherwise solid gun feel flimsy IMHO. here was my rifle about a week after I bought it:

Buy Your Guns & Organic Free Range Ammunition Locally!

Weaponcraft, a locally owned Portland company,  is now a member of the Buy Local Portland Maine campaign.

Top Ten Reasons to Buy Local in Portland, Maine!

  1. KEEP DOLLARS IN PORTLAND’S ECONOMY
For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the city’s tax base. For every $100 spent at a national chain or franchise store, only $14 remains in the community.
  2. EMBRACE WHAT MAKES PORTLAND UNIQUE
Portland is a city of neighborhoods. Where we shop, where we eat and hang out—all of it makes our neighborhood home. Chain stores are growing more aggressive throughout Portland and threatening to change the unique character of our city. One-of-a-kind, independent businesses are an integral part of what makes Portland a great place to live.
  3. FOSTER LOCAL JOB CREATION
Studies show that locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than national chains.
  4. HELP THE ENVIRONMENT
Local business owners tend to set up shop downtown and in walkable neighborhood business districts, rather than developing on the city’s fringe or in suburban strip malls accessible only by automobile. Having a diverse array of businesses within walking or biking distance reduces the amount of driving Portland residents must do to shop for goods and services. It also helps to conserve land, limit sprawl and lessen traffic and air pollution.
  5. NURTURE COMMUNITY
Independent businesses are owned by people who live in this community and are committed to investing in Portland’s future. Studies have found that locally owned businesses contribute more than twice as much of their revenue to charitable causes as corporate chains do. And advocates of local causes find that local business owners are generally much more accessible than executives of large corporations based in other states.
  6. CONSERVE YOUR TAX DOLLARS
Small neighborhood and downtown businesses require less public infrastructure and make more efficient use of city services compared to sprawling big-box stores and shopping centers, which are far more costly in terms of road work and police services, according to studies.
  7. HAVE MORE CHOICES
A marketplace of thousands of small businesses helps to ensure more innovation and competition, and lower prices over the long term. Independent businesses, choosing products based on what their local customers need and desire, not a national sales plan, guarantees a more diverse range of product and service choices.
  8. BENEFIT FROM LOCAL OWNERS’ EXPERTISE
Local business owners and employees often possess a level of expertise and a passion for the products they sell that is unmatched by employees and managers of national chains. They also tend to have a greater interest in getting to know their customers—who are, after all, also their neighbors. Simply put, local owners and employees take a special pride in their trade.
  9. PRESERVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class. Plus, the success of locally owned, independent businesses provides real-life inspiration to our young people, proving that they can stay in Maine and prosper on their own terms.
  10. ENSURE PORTLAND STANDS OUT FROM THE CROWD
In an increasingly homogenized world, communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character are more likely to attract entrepreneurs and new investment. Portlanders place a high value on individuality and consider our homegrown enterprises a source of pride. They are also an attraction to visitors.

New Women Shooting Blog:

This blog is being written by a women shooter addressing women’s concerns with firearms and personal security. My name is Julie Ann and I am the General Manager for Preparedness Experts (www.preparednessexperts.com), a sister company to Weaponcraft Training. Working in the same office as Weaponcraft, I am surounded by guns on a daily basis both at work and at home.  I wanted to educate myself on safe gun handling skills, laws, and shooting fundamentals so I attended the Basic Handgun/Concealed Carry Class offered by Weaponcraft.

Prior to attending the class, my husband gave me one of his guns to use in the class, only to realize that the gun was too large and was a poor fit for my hand. Fortunately there were demo guns available in the class that I could use. The Glock 19 9mm that I used fit my hand like a glove. This experience made me realize that women need an event where they can demo different handguns and rifles.  The Girls N Guns event is for both experienced and first time shooters, in a safe no-pressure  environment for women who have the same concerns and interest about firearms.

Reloading Ammunition Class

February 18, 2010 1 comment

The Weaponcraft Metallic Cartridge Reloading Classes have been a hit so far. Sure, it seems to be a little easier to find factory ammo on the shelves these days. But, it’s still very pricey! And, supplies seem spotty at times. Some of us much prefer to make our own ammo, using recycled brass cases picked up free from a range. For the cost of a bullet, a primer, and some powder, you can custom reload your own ammunition for less than ½ the cost of the best deal at the store. And, if you choose to cast your own bullets from recycled wheel weights, you can drive the cost of reloading down to mere pennies per round instead of $.30-.40 per round for store bought. And, you help save the planet at the same time. The lead from the bullets can be recycled almost indefinitely.

It’s cost effective and reasonable to reload using inexpensive equipment. During our nine hour class, you’ll learn how and where to get deals on supplies and equipment. Under my watchful eye (with 38 years of reloading experience), you’ll build pistol and rifle cartridges, and then test fire some to prove safety and functioning of your reloaded ammo in your guns. The experience and knowledge gained in the class translates perfectly, no matter what equipment you purchase later. We even include a copy of my book on the subject of reloading, a $30 value. You’ll also get a copy of the NRA Reloading Guide, which covers both metallic cartridge reloading and shot shell reloading. You’ll also get a certificate of completion, and get to take home any ammo that you haven’t fired. Check our web site for class scheduled dates. The class is limited to four students per class, no minimum. Let us know if you need a custom class date, we can accommodate most wishes.

Want to also learn how to cast your own lead bullets? I’m hosting a free cast bullet workshop in May. Call for details. 207-829-4020.

I’m currently working on a new project, also aimed at free bullets from recycled materials. One of my guns is a Sig Sauer P229 (we have them in stock at Weaponcraft) in .40 S&W caliber. I purchased an inexpensive set of swaging tools, and using recycled 9mm cases and a cast lead core (recycled wheel weight lead), I am swaging the parts into 185 grain Hollow Point bullets. I’d be happy to show you how this is done during a class. No more having to buy jacketed hollow points for me.
